Walking 2 - Orston to Aslockton - 11th October 2025

On Friday 11th October, Walking Group 2 started their walk in the pretty village or Orston in Nottinghamshire.  The weather was perfect for a walk of just over 5 miles.  The walk leader, Richard, took us along bridlepaths, skirting fields and through two villages, Whatton and Aslockton.  We were all very surprised when we entered the the village of Aslockton and saw the sign showing it was the birthplace of Thomas Cranmer.

Thomas was born in The Manor of Aslockton on 2 July 1489.  The Manor came into the family when Thomas' grandfather married Isabelle d'Aslacton in 1460 but it no longer exists.  Thomas spent the first 14 years of his life in Aslockton.  His father, also Thomas, was buried in Whatton Church in 1501 and shortly afterwards Thomas was sent to Jesus College, Cambridge.

St. Thomas Church in Aslockton dates back to the 13th century with stunning stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and a beautiful bell tower.   Unfortunately we didn't have time to go inside.

The village is well worth a visit and our lunch at the Durham Ox was most enjoyable.
