Out and About with Soar Valley u3a

One of the great strengths of Soar Valley u3a is the variety of opportunities available for members to get outdoors, explore new places, and share interests with like-minded people. Our outdoor groups provide not only enjoyable days out but also opportunities to learn, discover and socialise throughout the year.

Our Bowls and Croquet groups are now running with plenty of time left in the summer to try them out. As with all our groups, we keep costs to a minimum and you get to try a couple of sessions before we ask you to make a decision about joining.

Our Birdwatching Groups are favourites among nature enthusiasts. Members visit local nature reserves, wetlands and countryside locations to observe both resident and migratory species. Whether spotting kingfishers along the River Soar, watching birds of prey soaring overhead, or listening to woodland songbirds, the group offers something for everyone, from experienced birders to complete beginners. The shared knowledge within the group makes every outing both educational and enjoyable.

Garden lovers are equally well served by our Garden Group. Visits are arranged to a wide range of private and public gardens, providing inspiration for keen gardeners and appreciation for those who simply enjoy beautiful outdoor spaces. Many excursions include gardens that participate in the National Gardens Scheme, allowing members to discover hidden gems while supporting worthwhile charities. From colourful cottage gardens to impressive landscaped estates, each visit offers new ideas and plenty of seasonal interest.

History comes alive through the activities of our History Groups. Rather than simply reading about the past, members have the opportunity to explore historic sites first-hand. Visits to castles, churches, museums and historic towns help bring local and national history into focus. Guided tours and expert talks often add fascinating insights, making these excursions both informative and memorable.

Many of our outdoor activities also include visits to properties cared for by the National Trust. These remarkable houses, gardens and landscapes offer a unique glimpse into Britain's heritage. Whether exploring grand country houses, strolling through historic parkland or enjoying coastal and countryside walks, members benefit from the rich history, architecture and natural beauty that these sites preserve.

Beyond these specialist groups, many Soar Valley u3a members simply enjoy the companionship that comes from spending time together outdoors. Walking through beautiful countryside, observing wildlife, exploring historic buildings or sharing refreshments after a visit all contribute to the friendly atmosphere that makes our organisation so special.

The combination of learning, exercise and friendship is at the heart of every outing. Our outdoor groups encourage members to remain active, curious and engaged while discovering new places and interests. They demonstrate perfectly the u3a ethos of learning for pleasure and sharing experiences with others.

Whether your passion is birds, gardens, history, heritage or simply enjoying good company in attractive surroundings, Soar Valley u3a's outdoor groups offer a warm welcome and plenty of opportunities to get out and about.
