Coin Clipping Gangsters Versus an Alchemist

In the mid 18th century, the Cragg Vale Coiners were so active they threatened the stability of the British currency.

Char used to live in Cragg Vale – a steep valley near Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire – and the Coiners were a violent gang who lived in an isolated farmhouse up there. They filed or clipped the edges of gold coins, melted down the clippings and struck new gold coins.

This was not only illegal, but it carried the death sentence.

Find out what Sir Isaac Newton had to do with this illicit trade, what became of the gang, and how their activities changed our coins forever.
